# Void a held loan

> Record that a held Loan was never signed. The grant and the reference come back.

A void records that a `held` Loan was never signed. It is admitted while the Loan is `held` and after its hold has passed (`expired`). The Loan reads `voided`; its grant no longer counts its principal; its `reference` is free for a new issuance; it stays readable under its own identifier.

A Loan that was confirmed began. If its debt was never the Client's, record [a void of a debt that was not the client's](/api-reference/loans/void-not-the-clients) instead — the same state, with the money that story owes.

## Response

`201` with [the whole Loan](/api-reference/loans/read): `state` reads `voided`. Retry `200`.

## Refusals

| Condition | Status and code | What clears it |
| - | - | - |
| The Loan was issued active, or was confirmed | <Badge color="red">409</Badge> `not_held` | Void it as not the Client's |
| A void already stands | <Badge color="red">409</Badge> `voided` | Nothing to void |
| `on` is before the anchor | <Badge color="orange">422</Badge> `invalid_event` | State a later day |

A void whose freed `reference` was reused cannot be retracted: `422` `not_retractable`.
